Laboratory Technician Assistant – Mogadishu

Description

Reporting to Laboratory technician, the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for performing tasks to support the laboratory technical in the areas of basic lab testing, maintaining the cleanliness of lab equipment, and reporting.

Major Responsibilities 

  • Preparing specimens for examination, counting cells and looking for abnormal cells in blood and body fluids
  • Support the Lab technician in performing laboratory specimen processing consisting of receiving, identifying, assigning accession numbers, sorting, preparation and internal laboratory distribution of blood, urine, and other biological specimens.
  • Ensures proper patient and staff safety standards are met through compliance with laboratory safety standards.
  • In the absence of lab technician, respond to inquiries concerning patient lab values, reference ranges, specimen requirements, procedures, time required for tests, and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis.
  • Performs all duties using universal precautions and appropriate protective equipment as required to reduce exposure to infection, blood borne pathogens and hazardous materials. Insure lab rules and protocols are followed according to the standard
  • Support to ensure adequate availability of all medical and lab reagents
  • Assist the lab technician in managing, ordering and maintaining the stocks
  • Compile, organize and maintain accurate records of  lab results by documenting all the essential information in a hard-copy according to the standard lab tools and registers
  • Apply hygiene and safety protocols, doing daily cleaning /maintenance, sterilization, washing general glassware after procedures are done.
  • Ensure proper reporting and registration of the sample results in order to keep a written track of activity and give information to the relevant persons, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Report all relevant information linked to the activity in the laboratory to the lab technician, especially the loss/robbery/damage of laboratory equipment or medicines.
  • Take care, manage and organize efficiently the laboratory material/equipment.

Qualifications

  1. Degree in BSc in Microbiology or Diploma in clinical  laboratory
  2. At least 2 years of hands on experience in data entry and analysis with a large international non-governmental organization. Previous experience working for  hospitals and lab NGOs/MOH is an asset

Required Competencies:

  1. A mature person of high professional discipline and moral integrity.
  2. Competent to work under stress as the situation may dictate.
  3. Ability to work with displaced communities with diverse cultural and ethnic background.
